Research findings indicate that cooking programs have a positive impact on children's food-related preferences, attitudes, and behaviors. At Home and Hand Help NFP, our Cooking Matters program is dedicated to addressing hunger, Type II Diabetes, and obesity among youth aged 5-17. Through our program, we provide workshops facilitated by guest chefs or Cooking Matters at the Store Tour Leaders, where youth learn to cook their own meals under supervision. These workshops expose youth to a variety of recipes from different cultures around the world. Upon completion of the workshop, participants receive a certificate of achievement. We offer both online and in-person workshops throughout the year to accommodate different preferences and schedules.
The expression 'to break the bread with someone' is more symbolic than literal. It comes from olden times when the bread was often harder than how it is now. As a result, people had to break it rather than just 'tear' it to eat it. While it definitely means sharing a meal with someone, it goes beyond just that. It means sharing an emotional connection, a bond with someone over a meal. Food for centuries, after all, has been bringing people together. Using our Cooking Matters content as a starting point, facilitators are encouraged to connect topics to participants’ lived experiences. We invite participants to incorporate their cultural practices such as home, home of origin, community family and food into their Cooking Matters’ experience.
